SAR Disaster Response

Strike Teams

Our certified SAR members are trained to operate effectively in hazardous environments and maintain continuous situational awareness through rigorous risk assessments. Members are proficient in ICS structure and execute mission-specific tasks with minimal supervision and maximum efficiency.

Specialty Strike Teams

Disaster Response

Disaster response strike teams execute diverse tasks as requested by the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ). Each SAR Alberta disaster response strike team contains six (6) SAR members to operate on a 12-hour on / 12-hour off rotation. The strike team consists of:

  • Strike team leader
  • Team leader
  • Four disaster responders


Wellness Checks: 

  • Conducts welfare assessments of vulnerable populations, documenting findings.

Evacuations: 

  • Distributes evacuation notices for community awareness. 
  • Distributes evacuation orders and assists with evacuation procedures.

Traffic Management: 

  • Provides traffic control and safety measures.

General Labor: 

  • Performs general labor tasks as directed.

Logistics: Manages personnel, equipment, and supply logistics.

Reception Centre Support: Augments reception centre staffing and logistics.

Repatriation: Assists the AHJ to coordinate the repatriation of communities.

Volunteer Management: 

  • Strike team members possess the ability to coordinate and direct personnel groups in the execution of designated taskings (from the above list). Such groups may comprise municipal staff / volunteers, community response groups / volunteer groups and/or spontaneous volunteers.

Incident Management

  • Two or more certified SAR resources for continued 24/7 response.
  • Provides personnel for administrative support to the AHJ.
  • Manages command and coordination of modular taskings, scaling operations based on incident size and complexity.

Communications

  • Two or more experienced SAR resources for continued 24/7 response.
  • Delivers operational communications support to the AHJ.
  • Facilitates accurate and timely information transfer between search teams, the AHJ, and reception centres, utilizing various communication methods (two-way radios, ham radios, satellite, cellular, and verbal).
  • Maintains comprehensive communication documentation and manages radio equipment.

Geomatics

  • Two or more experienced SAR resources for continued 24/7 response.
  • Offers geomatics expertise to the AHJ.
  • Employs maps and GPS for precise navigation, orientation, and coordinate relay during incidents.
  • Pre-evacuation planning to optimize resource allocation for community evacuations.
  • Real-time tracking of field resources.
  • Post-incident hazard mapping (powerlines, fires, gas leaks), survivor, and victim location.
  • Supports the incident command planning section in resource allocation.

Water, Rope and Mountain Rescue

  • Two certified SAR resources to operate on a 12-hour on / 12-hour off rotation.
  • Certified rescue technicians provide access and egress to challenging locations, and extraction services. 
  • Maintains extrication overwatch.
  • Attends with relevant rescue response equipment and/or in conjunction with remote access strike teams.

RPAS

  • Certified pilot and spotter to operate on a 12-hour on / 12-hour off rotation.
  • Conduct aerial monitoring, search, and hotspot identification.  
  • Attends with RPAS unit appropriate for the resource tasking request.

Remote Access

Two certified operators to operate on a 12-hour on / 12-hour off rotation with the following remote access units (as required by the tasking):

  • ATV
  • UTV
  • Boat
  • Patient extraction litters / units
